project information
Overview
The Narellan Road Upgrade widened 6.8 kilometres of one of south-western Sydney’s key transport corridors from two to three lanes in each direction, creating a six-lane divided road between Camden Valley Way and Blaxland Road. Stage 2 — delivered by Seymour Whyte for Roads and Maritime Services — covered 5.2 kilometres of widening and included the upgrade of 10 major signalised intersections, widening of the existing bridge over the M31 Hume Motorway in live traffic carrying approximately 100,000 vehicles per day, construction of a 75-metre triple cable-stay pedestrian bridge, shared pedestrian and cyclist paths, and extensive drainage and utilities infrastructure. The upgrade opened to traffic in April 2018.
RCS Scope
Road & Civil Surveys provided survey support throughout the Stage 2 construction program, with 1–2 surveyors deployed across the corridor. Scope included earthworks set-out and as-built surveys, pavement and road widening set-out, drainage and utilities infrastructure, and survey support for the upgrade of 10 signalised intersections. RCS established and maintained the project control network and provided data calculations and EOM reporting. Night shift coverage supported road closure works and intersection upgrades along a corridor carrying heavy daily traffic volumes.
Value Driven
Narellan Road was the first project RCS delivered for Seymour Whyte — and the project that established a client relationship which has since carried through to the M4 Smart Motorway, Berry to Bomaderry, and beyond. Accurate set-out in tight live traffic conditions — particularly at signalised intersections where construction staging, traffic switches and lane configurations changed frequently — kept the widening program moving without survey hold-ups. Reliable night shift execution at intersection upgrades ensured critical closure windows were used productively. Despite a lean crew size, RCS kept pace with a fast-moving urban widening program by maintaining flexibility, responsiveness and consistent output.
