project information

Overview

The Rankin Park to Jesmond section is the fifth and final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass — a key orbital route connecting the Pacific Highway at Bennetts Green with the Pacific Highway at Sandgate. Delivered by Fulton Hogan for TfNSW, the project involves construction of a 3.4-kilometre four-lane divided road with interchanges at Newcastle Road and Lookout Road, direct access to the John Hunter Hospital precinct, retaining walls, structures to improve bushland connectivity for people and wildlife, and off-road provisions for pedestrians and cyclists including a shared path bridge over Newcastle Road. Once complete, the bypass will reduce travel times by up to 80 per cent during peak periods, removing up to 30,000 vehicles per day from Lookout Road, Croudace Street and Newcastle Road. The project is jointly funded on an 80:20 basis by the Australian and NSW governments.

RCS Scope

Road & Civil Surveys provides survey support for Fulton Hogan on the bypass construction, with 1–2 surveyors deployed on site. Scope covers earthworks set-out and as-built surveys, pavement and road set-out, drainage and utilities infrastructure, interchange works at Newcastle Road and Lookout Road, and retaining wall surveys. RCS supports the project control network and delivers monitoring services for adjacent assets. Night shift and road closure coverage supports live traffic interfaces, with work carried out adjacent to the John Hunter Hospital precinct requiring careful coordination to maintain access to the hospital campus.

Value Driven

RCS provides reliable supplementary survey capability for Fulton Hogan on one of Newcastle’s largest infrastructure projects. The engagement continues the Fulton Hogan relationship established on the Albion Park Rail Bypass — with RCS now supporting Fulton Hogan across multiple concurrent projects including Albion Park Rail, the NICB, and the Coomera Connector. Night shift execution adjacent to the John Hunter Hospital precinct demands disciplined survey practice in a sensitive environment where maintaining hospital access is a non-negotiable constraint.
