Project Overview

The Old South Road Rehabilitation was one of the largest civil construction undertakings delivered by Wingecarribee Shire Council in recent years — a 9.7-kilometre road reconstruction between Bowral and Mittagong in the Southern Highlands. Delivered by Stefanutti Construction in three stages, the project included full road pavement widening and rehabilitation, replacement of the bridge over Mittagong Creek with a modern concrete and steel structure, installation of stormwater pits and pipes, guardrails, road furniture, and associated earthworks. The upgraded road provides motorists with a safer, wider and more resilient road surface along one of the Shire’s most important local thoroughfares. The project was completed and opened to traffic in mid-2024.

RCS Scope

Road & Civil Surveys provided survey support across all three stages of the rehabilitation program, with 3–4 surveyors deployed along the 9.7-kilometre corridor. Scope included earthworks set-out, road pavement widening and rehabilitation surveys, stormwater drainage, bridge replacement survey support at Mittagong Creek, and guardrail and road furniture set-out. RCS established and maintained the project control network, provided data calculations and EOM reporting, delivered UAV flyovers for progress documentation and volumetrics, and completed as-built surveys across the full corridor length.

Value Driven

Old South Road was RCS’s first project with Stefanutti Construction — expanding the client base into local government delivery in the Southern Highlands region. Delivering accurate survey across a 9.7-kilometre linear corridor through undulating terrain required efficient control network design and systematic coverage across staged works. UAV flyovers provided the project team with consistent progress and volumetric data across a corridor that would have been time-consuming to capture by conventional methods alone. Data calculations and EOM reporting gave the commercial team reliable quantity information throughout the staged delivery.
