project information

Overview

The West Dapto Road Upgrade is a key piece of infrastructure supporting the West Dapto Urban Release Area — the largest urban release in New South Wales outside the Sydney region, with 19,000 new homes and over 50,000 residents planned over coming decades. Delivered by Abergeldie for Wollongong City Council, the current stage covers the upgrade of West Dapto Road between Shone Avenue and Yard Street, including road widening and new pavements, upgrade of the Shone Avenue / Wongawilli Road / West Dapto Road intersection, stormwater drainage, a new pedestrian bridge, shared paths, extensive services relocation, and associated civil works. Co-funded by the NSW Government’s Housing Acceleration Fund, the project involves a temporary full road closure to accelerate delivery, with reopening targeted for mid-2026.

RCS Scope

Road & Civil Surveys provides embedded survey support across the upgrade, with 3–4 surveyors deployed on site. Scope covers road widening and pavement set-out, intersection upgrade surveys at Shone Avenue and Wongawilli Road, stormwater drainage infrastructure, pedestrian bridge surveys, and services relocation support. RCS maintains the project control network, provides data calculations and EOM reporting, delivers UAV flyovers for progress documentation, and completes as-built surveys across the works.

Value Driven

West Dapto Road builds on an existing Abergeldie relationship, reinforcing RCS’s presence in the Illawarra region on local government-funded infrastructure. The combination of intersection upgrades, pedestrian bridge construction, and extensive services relocation within a full road closure environment requires coordinated survey support that keeps pace with a compressed delivery program. UAV flyovers provide efficient progress documentation across a corridor where multiple work fronts operate concurrently under closure conditions. RCS’s track record on road upgrade projects — from Narellan Road through to Berry to Bomaderry and Albion Park Rail — translates directly to the type of urban road widening and intersection work that characterises this project.
