Construction Surveys We Provide

Construction surveying is not one task. Across the life of a road or civil project the scope moves from establishing the control network, through daily set-out, into conformance, and finally into the as-built record the client accepts at handover. We cover the whole sequence.

Survey control. Establishing and validating the primary and secondary control the project will be built on, tied to project datum and MGA. Control is re-observed through the job rather than assumed to have held, because marks get knocked, buried by earthworks and moved by settlement.

Construction set-out. Marking the design on the ground for the crews: pavement layers, kerb and gutter, drainage, pits and pipes, bridge piles and headstocks, retaining walls, batters and services. Set-out is issued against a recorded design revision, so there is a trail when the design moves.

Conformance and work-as-executed. Measuring what was actually built against what was designed, and producing the conformance records and WAE data the client and the superintendent need. This is the survey work that gets a lot signed off, and leaving it late is what holds projects up.

Volumes and earthworks. Progress surveys, cut and fill volumes, stockpile measurement and monthly quantities for claims. We run these conventionally or from UAV capture, depending on the size of the site and how much of it is trafficable.

Machine control support. Preparing, checking and uploading the 3D models machine guidance runs on, then localising and verifying the machines against project control. A model that has not been checked against control puts the error straight into the ground.

Asset and pre-start surveys. Detail and feature survey, service location pickup, existing surface capture and pre-start condition records before the site is disturbed.

How We Support a Road Construction Project

Early works and establishment

Existing surface capture, service locating pickup and the primary control network. We validate the design against what is actually on the ground before the first machine moves, because a clash found in survey costs a day and the same clash found in construction costs a month.

 

 

Bulk earthworks

Set-out for clearing, batters and drainage, progress surveys for monthly quantities, and machine control model checks. Volumes are reconciled against the design surface so the claim and the quantities agree.

 

 

Pavement and structures

Layer-by-layer set-out and conformance across pavement, kerb and drainage, plus the tighter work on structures: pile positions, headstocks, bearings, deck levels and bridge geometry.

 

 

Conformance and handover

Work-as-executed survey, conformance reporting and the final asset data package in the format the client’s asset system requires. We build this through the project rather than assembling it at the end.

 

 

Embedded Surveyors or Ad Hoc Callouts

Most civil contractors buy survey one of two ways: a crew that lives on the project, or a surveyor called out when something needs marking.

Callouts work on small or intermittent scopes. On a project with continuous set-out, a live design and daily conformance, they cost more than they appear to. Every mobilisation carries travel and set-up. Every new surveyor has to rebuild an understanding of the control network, the current design revision and the site rules. And when a crew is standing around waiting on marks, the cost of that delay is the whole crew’s day, not the surveyor’s hour.

An embedded surveyor gets ahead of the program instead of reacting to it. They hold the control network, know which design revision is current, and pick up conformance as the work goes in rather than chasing it back weeks later. They also sit in the planning conversations, which is where survey saves the most time on a job.

We resource projects both ways. On a short scope we will tell you a callout is the right call. On a project with a continuous work front, embedding a surveyor almost always costs less across the job.

Survey Control and Accuracy

Everything on a construction project traces back to the control network. If the control is wrong, the set-out is wrong, the conformance is wrong and the machine models are wrong.

We establish control to project specification, tied to project datum and MGA, and re-observe it through the job rather than assuming it has held. Marks get knocked, buried by earthworks and moved by settlement, and across a long corridor that movement is not always obvious until it shows up in a defect.

Set-out is issued against a recorded design revision and conformance is picked up as the work goes in. Where machine guidance is running, we localise and verify the machines against project control on a set frequency, so a drifting machine is caught in a check rather than in a rework.

Survey data is delivered in whatever format the project runs on, whether that is a CAD file, a conformance spreadsheet, a model for the digital engineering team or an asset package for the client’s system.
